Welcome back for our seventh HUTS Town Guide! Today we are exploring Roscoe; a quiet town at the heart of fly fishing country. Roscoe is an unpretentious old railroad town in the Western Catskills perfect for a private getaway for you and your family and just a short drive to all of the most popular shops and restaurants in the area.
For some seriously good cocktails and small plates check out Do Good Spirits just off the main street of Roscoe where this classic firehouse turned micro distillery will show you how the locals like to get some R&R after a day on the river. Don’t leave without trying their Beaverkill Bourbon Cream to warm you up on a chilly Catskill evening. Right around the corner you can stroll on over to the most authentic Italian restaurant in the area. Raimondos has been run by the sweetest Sicilian family for three generations from pizza to classic soul warming dishes like lasagna you will never leave hungry.
Roscoe was voted the ultimate fishing town in the US by the World Fishing Network and the best outdoor sports town in NY, needless to say you will have plenty of options when picking the day’s activity. Try taking a guided fishing trip with the family run Baxter House River Outfitters, you’ll come home with some great stories. Another HUTS favorite is going for a round of golf at Tennanah Lake Golf & Tennis Club, after you practice your putt grab a drink at the clubhouse perched on top of a mountain overlooking the rolling hills and farm in the distance, It’s arguably the best place to catch the sunset in the area.
After you work up a thirst you might want to take stuff indoors and head to the Roscoe Beer Company for some refreshing Catskill crafted brews and live music. The HUTS favorite is the Roscoe Posted Pale Ale, it’s just what you need after a day in the great outdoors. If you find yourself in need of some arts and culture take a trip up to Duke Pottery to find some beautiful and unique handmade ceramics. You’ll find local artisan made jewelry and eclectic collections of paintings, textiles, books, honey and local maple syrup for sale.
Don’t miss the opportunity to stay at this 1938 built motel right on the famous Beaverkill river. Restored to its former glory The Red Rose Motel is outfitted with decor that we describe as summer camp meets ski lodge will bring you back to your summer camp days, minus all the wedgies. No matter the season this is the place to stay and catch some Zzz’s after fishing, hiking, or hitting the slopes. The property also boasts a restaurant called The Tavern with something for everyone and a small vintage and antique shop tucked away in the lobby!
