Town Guide #5: Callicoon

Hey there! Welcome to our fifth HUTS Town Guide. Today we are exploring Callicoon; this historic hamlet nestled right along the Delaware River will surely find a quick home in your heart. History buffs, art aficionados, and micro distillery enthusiasts alike will all find something to appreciate about this town.

Where to eat:

Bà & Me is the fairytale ending to the City-to-Catskills transition, this fairytale happens to be about delicious authentic Vietnamese food. From savory soul warming Pho to the freshest Summer Rolls this seasonal spot (outdoor seating only) is the perfect place to refuel after a day on the river. For year round eats check out The Raleigh. This restaurant features elevated locally sourced takes on comfort food. Maybe wear some stretchy pants for when you clean your plate of their Shrimp and Grits or Local Pork Chop.

What to do outside:

As a protected part of the National Parks System, the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River is packed with endless hiking trails and waterways to explore with views of the expansive river valley. Near the heart of town you can take a quick stroll over the bridge to find yourself in Pennsylvania territory, or enjoy the renowned farmer’s market set in a lush park right along the riverbank (a great spot for a picturesque picnic with your market goodies). If you’re more adventurous take a ride over to Lander’s River Trips where you can rent anything from tubes to canoes. Set right next to Skinner Falls this is the spot for swimming, fishing, and camping.

What to do inside:

Whether you’re a local or just passing through one thing is certain: the charm of the Callicoon Theater, built in the 1940s, will draw you in and make you feel like you stepped back in time. From private screenings to the newest blockbusters this one screen theatre will have you coming back time and time again. Only just having switched to digital projection a few years back, you’re in for a cinematic experience. They even have the original film projector on display!
