Located on the north east side of Long Island, Southold was settled in 1640 and is the oldest town on Long Island. With Dutch roots, the town is home to shopping, restaurants and even a museum dedicated to the local history.

What to do Outside

The Paul Stoutenburgh Preserve is a 52-acre preserve that showcases the wildlife and nature of the eastern end of Long Island. From marsh meadows and woodlands to ponds and wetlands, the Paul Stoutenburgh Preserve includes various habitats and their correlating inhabitants. This land was established by the Peconic Land Trust, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Running along Hashamomuck Pond, this preserve has two trails, the main trail which runs about three-quarters of a mile, and the forest trail, which runs about one-third of a mile.

What to do Inside

Step back into the 19th century with the Southold Historical Museum. The Maple Lane Museum complex is made up of numerous buildings, including the Ann Currie-Bell House, an ice house, the 1822 Bay View Schoolhouse, the Thomas Moore House, a blackship shop, and more. The historical museum also has a lighthouse location that includes a nautical museum. Open on weekends, these restored spots are a must-do for history lovers.
