Town Guide #3: Roxbury

Hi there! Welcome to the third in our HUTS Town Guide Series. Today we’re profiling Roxbury, a delightful hamlet that meets the eastern branch of the Delaware River among the Catskill Mountains. An ideal locale for outdoor enthusiasts with endless mountain views, Roxbury is also designated a “Preserve America Community.” This distinction recognizes communities which use historic assets for economic development and community revitalization.

Where to Eat:

Chappie’s offers Roxbury locals and travelers alike good food and good company. This location has been serving up solid eats to the folks of Roxbury for generations, with its roots on Main Street as a diner called “Budds” and then later as “Cassie’s Café.” The current ownership appeals to the Brooklyn set with artisanal pizzas and local craft IPAs. Swing by in the morning as well for some soul satisfying buttermilk pancakes.

What to do Outside:

Hit the slopes at one of the last family owned and operated ski mountains in the Catskill region, Plattekill Mountain. The laid-back atmosphere at Plattekill evokes a nostalgic 80s ski movie montage,  and emphasizes family fun. With 38 trails for winter skiing and snowboarding, and summertime mountain biking and yoga, you really can’t go wrong with a day at Plattekill

What to do Inside:

All Aboard! the Delaware & Ulster Railroad, a dream ride for the vintage train buff and old timey adventurer. Sit back and relax as you chug along the bucolic scenery of the Delaware. You can even be part of an old fashioned train robbery if you’ve always wanted to watch the Sheriff and his deputies take down those pesky Catskill Mountain Bushwackers.

Where to Stay:

If you’re looking to get whimsical, be sure to book Maryann’s Coconut Cream Pie theme room at the Roxbury Motel or step up your game in the Dashing Haberdasher suite at the neighboring sister property Roxbury at Stratton Hall. The proprietors describe the Roxbury experience as what would happen if “Alice in Wonderland married Willy Wonka and set up residence in the Wizard of Oz.” I don’t think we need to say much more – you gotta check this place out for yourself.
