Follow HUTS through our twentieth Town Guide of the historic and charming Dutch village of Kinderhook. Rich in history and Dutch pride, this village was the birthplace of the 8th President of the United States, Martin Van Buren, who was also the first US born President. You’ll be delighted to stroll through the well preserved village with architectural styles from Dutch vernacular, Federal, Georgian, to Greek Revival.

Where to eat: 

For our favorite grilled cheese in Columbia County head over to Saisonnier, the Kimchi Grilled cheese or the Triple Meltdown are our go to comfort foods. Paired perfectly with one, or a few, of their many craft beer choices you’ll start feeling like you might not want to leave this cozy Dutch town.

What to do outside: 

Start your outdoor adventure with the Kinderhook Walking Tour and take in the rich history of this town. From Martin Van Buren’s Estate to one of the first mansions built north of Manhattan before the Revolutionary war you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. After your historical journey be sure to check out the Kinderhook Farmers Market every Saturday, voted the best farmers market in Columbia County!

What to do inside:

The School is an extension of the Jack Shainman Gallery that breathed new life into the 30,000-square-foot former highschool in Kinderhook. The gallery aims to exhibit all encompassing shows of a single artists career to show the nuances of their artistic evolution.  Most recently showing an exhibition focused on Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol.

Where to stay:

Rest easy at the historic Van Schaack House Bed & Breakfast. Know for serving as New York’s first Law School in the 18th century this place is packed with charm and antiques. This four room b&b is quaint and comfortable and will make your weekend one for the history books!
